Luminous clock hands work through photoluminescence. They absorb light, typically from ambient or UV sources, and then gradually release this stored energy as visible light, causing them to glow in the dark. The brightness and duration of the glow depend on how much light the clock has been exposed to. The glow will gradually fade as the stored energy is released.
